Printing Dogs of Brighton Tea Towels

Today we have been printing more Dogs of Brighton Tea Towels for the fantastic Stanley Road Store in Brighton.  This is an evolution of our best selling Dogs of London Tea Towel , which we have been making for many years, but this is a sea side development especially for Stanley Road Store.

Like the vast majority of our products, this is hand printed in our own studio, which is very important to us.  In our studio we can go from hand drawings like these, to digital print ready artwork, to film positives for screens to be printing in a few hours, and this in house production is a really important part of how we work.

The process we’re showing here starts with printing the film positive which makes it possible to get these detailed drawings and type combinations onto a screen and print anywhere from 1 to 1000’s of copies.

This film is then exposed onto a screen which has 1000’s of tiny holes, using a special UV light so that the bits of the design we want to print are left open, but all the other holes are filled in.

Once the screen is washed out and dried, it’s ready to print. To print on paper, it’s quite straight forward as the bed we have is made for this job…..But to print this large on fabric like a tea towel, we have had to invent some ways to make this work properly, but the main thing is to have a way of ‘registering’ the screen and the tea towel, so that each printed tea towel is in pretty much the same place (give or take a few mm’s).

Now we can actually mix ink and print.  These inks are water based and much safer and nicer for the environment than traditional oil-based textile inks.  This colour that we are printing the Brighton Dog Tea Towel in comes from references in Brighton of the sea and the taxis

Now, if we need to we can print 1000’s of these….But today we are just doing 50!

If you can’t get to Brighton to buy one from the Stanley Road Store, you can get one here!
